A jubilee is a celebration of a monarch’s reign. As Britain's longest ever reigning monarch, this year, Elizabeth II will be celebrating her Platinum Jubilee to mark seventy years since her ascension in 1952.
To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, there will be an extra-long bank holiday weekend running from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 of June 2022.
A four-day weekend is a great opportunity to get together with friends and family and (hopefully) enjoy the weather, along with some delicious food, and (for those who indulge) probably a little wine or beer.
In Britain, we have a long history of throwing street parties, going all the way back to World War I, and it has become a traditional way to celebrate national events like Jubilees, Coronations and royal weddings. Everyone brings tables and food and you set up in the street to enjoy a relaxing day. Please be sure to follow government guidelines when organising your street party, or visit streetparty.org.uk for more hints, tips and advice.
If you are going to a street party, you need to think about what food you’re going to bring. Even if you’re just heading outside, it’s best to take food that travels easily and doesn’t spoil if it gets a little bit shaken about, that’s why it’s a good idea to check out our page on picnics and picnic food for some inspiration.
Another great way to enjoy the long weekend is by firing up the coals and having a barbie. If you are thinking of having a barbecue to celebrate the jubilee weekend, you’ll find our page of helpful tips to make sure you get everything right.
The Big Lunch is your chance to show off your culinary talents and make sure your neighbours invite you round for dinner more often. Just don't forget to tell them that all your kitchen creations were made using RSPCA Assured products to help us spread the word about higher welfare farming standards.
